Cathédrale Saint-Gatien in Tours, visit
Two in one.
Listed as a historical monument in 1862, the Cathédrale Saint-Gatien in Tours was built between the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 16th century.
The remains of the former Roman cathedral were used to build the present cathedral. Owing to the reuse of this old cathedral, the choir is distinctly wider than the nave, with the result that the transept crossing is plainly trapezoidal.
The great glass window on the main façade, under the rose window, depicts eight saints above a transparent gallery, itself above the transparent tympan of the door.
Next to the Cathédrale Saint-Gatien stands the Musée des Beaux-Arts (museum of fine arts) in what was formerly the archbishop's palace.
